The Ninth Floor - Jessica Dimmock
http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid1321280105/bctid1326153170
In 2004, anywhere from 20 to 30 young addicts lived on the ninth floor of an elegant narrow building overlooking Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The squatters had turned the sprawling apartment into a dark, desperate and chaotic place.
People hustled, scored, shot and smoked wherever they could. Friends conned each other for their next hit. They slept on piles of clothes on the floor. The power was shut off; the bathroom unusable; the kitchen filled with garbage. Anything of value was sold off.
For nearly three years, Jessica Dimmock followed this crew documenting what happened to them after eviction, how they fought to get clean, sank deeper into addiction, went to jail, started families and struggled to survive.

Powerful, intense, compelling, sad, horrifying, horrific, real, there's another thousand words to describe this an amazing body of work. This is story telling at it's best, honest...! thank you for taking this story out of Fifth Av and showing the rest of the world.

Preventing Kitten Road Kill
They're cute, white, and fluffy - and they glow in the dark when exposed to ultraviolet light. The cats are actually clones. They're also the first cats to be cloned with a manipulated fluorescence protein gene
The researchers hope that the procedure could help develop treatments for human genetic diseases.
The scientists, from Gyeongsang National University in South Korea, explained that they used the skin cells of the mother cat for cloning. To modify its genes, they inserted a virus in the skin cells, which were then transplanted into the mother's womb. Four Turkish Angora kittens were born in January, but two died during a caesarean section. The two living cats, now nearly a year old, weigh about 6-7pounds
By demonstrating that it's possible to clone an animal with a manipulated gene, the research could help scientists better understand human genetic diseases. For example, scientists may be able to reproduce cloned animals suffering from the same diseases as humans. Cats have about 250 of the same kinds of genetic diseases that affect humans.
The ability to clone genetically altered cats may also help to develop new stem cell treatments for humans. And, using the same technology, researchers may be able to clone endangered animals like tigers, leopards and wildcats.

Cause and Effect Conference
"The AIGANY Cause/Effect conference is underway today, with the morning sessions off to a very strong start. Introductions by coordinators Emma Presler and Mike Essl were followed by a full-on historical tour of propaganda by Steve Heller. Arguing that the term was not always pejorative, Heller traced propaganda through magazines, posters, words, icons, photography, graffiti, ad hoc demonstration placards, and guerrilla re-purposing. Lots of the images will be found in his books and on his SVA podcasts, but this is a PowerPoint deck you'll definitely want to get ahold of.
Seymour Chwast then boarded the tour bus, showing the audience an assortment of his political posters and illustrations, beginning with the observation, "The 60's was a great time in addition to sex and drugs...people bought posters."
Mark Randall then took to the stage with an overview of core-fave Urban Forest Project, revealing that some of the posters had to be edited (Seymour Chwast's being one of them!), and showing delight that other cities across the US have picked up the initiative." CORE77.

Bio Artists... not quite right
"At the forefront of this movement is SymbioticA, a bioart laboratory funded by the University of Western Australia. Run by Ionat Zurr and her husband Oron Catts, the couple is continually pushing the boundaries of art; they've grown a replica of an ear with living human skin cells, miniature wings with the flesh of a pig and mouse cells in the shape of a tiny leather jacket. McReport Cards
Totally cringe worthy. A school in Seminole County, Florida, has given permission for the McDonalds stores to advertise on the report crads of some 27000 students in the district. all Mcdonalds had to do was pay the small sum for the cost of printing. I dont know if its suprising or not, that there was only 1 parental complaint, obviously the schools have decided to continue running the promo.

Jason Thielke
“Thielke’s work is linear, layered, dynamic and multi-media in nature. It encompasses both contemporary and traditional techniques much like the architectural design of today. His process of drawing, composing, and eventually transferring images to wood is parallel to the planning, deconstruction and reconstruction phases of urban gentrification.”

About time Etnies....
Reminds me of a funny story... leaving the house of a girl i was seeing for a while... and we'd just packed up the car to head country for a while ... Girls Mum comes running down the drive way ... yelling at the top of her lungs to try and catch us ... "Don't Forget Your Eccies!!"
Meh... The shoes!!... This classic skateboard sneaker has hit back for the holiday season... First release in Black/red and Red/white looks mighty fine in my eyes. Traditional "23" embossed on the heel quarter. Looking forward to about a gazillion more releases and material treatments in the coming months.

Animated Prescision
"Japanese motion graphics firm Groovisions took an architectural drafting convention, axonometric drawings, and used it to create music videos for musician Halfby. (They've also done plan-view and elevation-view music videos for clients as diverse as Nike and Cornelius, but we like the axonometric the best.) The video contains the best elements of Japanese creativity: it's simple but precise, fun, and silly in a good way." Core77.

FUCK THIS!!
Here's a little gem of an idea...
"Juvenile, profane, and timeless, FUCK this book collects images of real public signs that have been mischievously altered by stickers bearing the most expressive of all four letter words. Addictively hilarious, the results show a world persuasively transformed. Please Don't Fuck the Pigeons indeed. What happens if one triggers the Automatic Sprinkler Fuck Off Valve? And is it any wonder The Fuck Depo is so popular? All photographs are unretouched-the result of countless hours on the hunt for the almost perfect sign, in need of just the slightest improvement. This is not social commentary. There is no message. It's not meant to offend, exploit, or embarrass anyone. All real stickers. All real signs. All in fun." - Chronicle
